'Pet Smokers' poster warning

Smokers who are also pet owners in Ayrshire are being warned that their smoke could be harming their furry friends.

The school of veterinary medicine at the University of Glasgow – together with the NHS for Ayrshire and Arran – is working to produce a series of Posters that aim to educate people about the issues that could potentially arise from pets breathing in second-hand smoke from their owners.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran's Doctor Carol Davidson spoke about minimising the risks that tobacco smoke can pose to pet health, saying:

"Many animal lovers who are also smokers may not realise that their second-hand smoke will also be having an effect on their pets' health. We want to encourage as many smokers as possible to consider either smoking outside or making one room in their house the designated smoking room."

Doctor Davidson also acknowledged that people may not be able to quit but that they could still take measures to save their pet's health, saying:

"While we know that the best thing smokers can do is to give up smoking, we also recognise that some people may not be ready to quit. In the meantime we want to encourage them to think about the impact that smoking has on the health of others in their homes and cars."

The message given on the posters is 'How many cigarettes does your pet smoke a day?'. By distributing this message via poster printing, Ayr pet owners are likely to see the message and will perhaps be encouraged to think about the health of their pet before lighting up in future.
