There had long been a feeling among those who run stalls at the market that the old location lacked the prominence needed to attract customers, and the first day’s trading at its new base appeared to back that argument up.
The market opened for business on the high street in early July with stallholders reporting that they had seen a real upturn in fortunes.
Speaking to a journalist from the Ayr Advertiser, Thomson McKenzie, the director of the Farmers Market, confirmed that there had been a major increase in people visiting on its first day, adding:
“The market is now part of the town rather than being hidden away. Despite running for 15 years a lot of folk never knew about it… This move brings us into line with the likes of Paisley where we are situated in the middle of the town.”
Stallholders from the market will be able to call on places offering full colour printing in Ayr if they want to create eye-catching advertising materials to help capitalise on this new visibility.
The once-a-month Farmers Market currently includes 10 stalls, selling locally produced vegetables, meat and eggs.
