Wallace Kerr, 63, from the Dalmilling district of Ayr, has developed a strong interest in Scottish history since retiring and is now in charge of an online group dedicated to exploring local and national history.
He feels that the distinctive Victorian-era school building, which is due to close when the new campus in Craigie is ready, would be the perfect venue for a museum. He told a reporter from the Ayr Advertiser:
“A museum would be an ideal use of the building. It is so sad that our town with its fascinating past doesn’t even have its own museum.
“Ayr Academy is such a beautiful building and I would hate to see it flattened.”
A museum dedicated to the history of the town – and highlighting its connections with iconic figures such as William Wallace – could prove a popular attraction for visitors. It would also be able to make use of local services like postcard printing in Ayr, to ensure souvenirs were available, which would be a boost to the local economy.
