Professor Fiona McQueen has been given this honour as a tribute to all of the work she has done for the NHS over the course of her career. She first began working as a nurse back in the early 1980s, before winning promotion to an Executive Director position a decade later, and then becoming NHS Ayrshire and Arran Lead Nurse at the end of the 1990s.
The next step in her career progression was her appointment as Interim Chief Nursing Officer for the whole of Scotland in 2014, before taking on this role full-time a year later and staying in post for the next seven years.

According to the Daily Record, the Chief Executive and Acting General Secretary for the Royal College of Nursing, Pat Cullen, stated that:
“All the nursing and healthcare staff who have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours should be rightly proud to have been acknowledged in this way.”
Cullen added that these staff members had proved their worth again during the Covid-19 pandemic.
