What began as a routine property clearance soon turned into a history trip for Michael Callan, the boss of Ayr auctioneers Thomas R Callan. Whilst sorting through a selection of shoe Boxes recently, he found an old mahogany gun case which housed two stunning flintlock pistols.
Further investigation also revealed a handwritten note inside the case which claims that the guns once belonged to Lord Combermere and were put to use at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The current property owners have no known connections to the pistols, however, meaning the authenticity of the note cannot be verified.
Made in around 1800 by London firm Hawkes and Moseley, the guns have walnut stocks and octagonal Damascus steel barrels. Accompanied by a handful of lead bullets, a powder flask and a bullet mould, their exemplary condition means that they will be argued over by collectors across the globe.
The auctioneers estimate that the pair of pistols are valued at between £4,000 to £6,000, and the cased pair will be shown in an upcoming fine art and antique sale being held on Saturday November 23. The closing date for entry to the auction is Monday October 14.
