A new book has been put together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of a brass band from the Ayrshire region.
Dalmellington Band, a regularly changing group of musicians from a mining village in the Doon Valley, has been entertaining people in Ayr throughout its extensive history. As well as the book, the band will be recognised with a range of events taking place throughout 2014.
The group started in 1864 and has since gone from strength to strength. There are now two parts to Dalmellington Band, the junior and the senior sections; both of which are equally prolific in their displays of live music.
The history of the band will be detailed in the commemorative book, which is being worked on now and will be ready for release following a busy schedule of celebratory concerts across Scotland in December 2014.
Bert Richardson, the president of the band, is working closely with Hugh Johnstone MBE on the project and the pair are being supported by Donald Reid, a local Historian.
The group had hoped that the book would be funded by a grant, but the application for support was unsuccessful and it is now being supported by a list of subscribers who have contributed to the publishing fees. This list will be printed in subsequent issues of the book.
Printing companies in Ayr and the surrounding region often offer cheaper solutions to publish Booklets and Brochures than big publishing houses do, so the members of Dalmelligton Band could be considering this option.
