Unity Grill is being described as a ‘social’ restaurant – the first facility of its kind to open in Ayr. It is the brainchild of Angela McNay, a member of South Ayrshire Common Weal, and she hopes to offer local people a welcoming atmosphere, appetising meals and a feeling of sharing and community.
All of the money that the restaurant brings in will be put back into projects dedicated to eradicating food poverty. All of those who live in Ayr will be encouraged to visit and those unable to afford the cost of a meal will be able to get food vouchers by giving up an hour to volunteer at Unity Grill.
The project is a social entrepreneur one and has the backing of Voluntary Action South Ayrshire, with Angela telling a reporter from the Carrick Herald that:
“The aim is to make a difference, provide real comfort food and reduce social exclusion. We want people to sit together and speak to one another so that people don’t have to sit by themselves.”
It is hoped that Unity Grill will launch during the spring and it can use leaflet printing to get the word out.
