Tunbridge Wells to host sloe gin contest

The Sloe Gin World Championships are set to be held in Tunbridge Wells this winter.

At the George Inn, the championships will take place on December 15. It will be the tenth time that the event has occurred. Promotional products can be useful for branding purposes at events such as this. Tunbridge Wells local, George Shaw is the current champion and he told Kent Online:

“It gets bigger every year. We've attracted entries from all around the world. We had a group come over from Germany last year. Vancouver was the furthest.”

A decade ago, the concept of the championship came together. The event emerged from a debate about what constitutes the best method of creating gin from sloe berries. Since then, artisan and commercial producers have opted to engage in the contest.

Shaw believes that the quality of competition entrants has improved significantly down the years. Entrepreneur Dr Norman Lewis thinks that there may be a correlation between this trend and the recent explosion of interest in British gin. Dr Lewis pointed out that there has been an increase in national gin sales of almost 40% in a single year.

After supporting the MS Society for some time, the Sloe Gin World Championships is looking for a fresh cause to back. Ideally, Shaw is searching for a charity with local roots and big ambitions. In the past, the organisers have raised about £2,000 from the event.
