What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

Tunbridge Wells getting ready for nationwide horticultural competition

With help from the community, volunteers and flyers, the annual Royal Tunbridge Wells in Bloom competition kicked off recently.

Proceedings got underway with flyer printing in Tunbridge Wells producing materials about competition entry, which were then distributed throughout the area.

The closing date for entry forms will be in June, and judging of the competition is to be held over the course of July. In September, there will be an awards presentation held for the ‘best of’ categories, along with a presentation for schools that have taken part.

There was an appeal for volunteers to help with the distribution of leaflets throughout the community, along with cleaning up the town, and an appeal for owners of greenhouses to offer any surplus plants they may have.

This year, as part of Britain in Bloom, Royal Tunbridge Wells will be in competition as a Large Town, against places such as Alton, Faversham, Haywards Heath and Sittingbourne, among others.

Those in Tunbridge Wells interested in taking part are encouraged to get involved. While those entering can choose their own theme, the town also has three themes for people to consider; these are ‘Commemorating the First World War’, ‘Bees’ and ‘Britain In Bloom’s 50th anniversary’.

As the largest horticultural competition in the country, Britain in Bloom was first held in 1963 and often sees more than 1,000 communities across the UK taking part.
