What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

Self-driving vehicles may come to Tunbridge Wells

Self-driving cars could be on the way to the roads of Tunbridge Wells due to the vision of the council.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) may invest around £30m in new technology as it looks to tackle congestion issues. If the initiative goes ahead, booklet printing courtesy of local printers could be employed to promote the innovation. Similar vehicles have already been used within the Netherlands, Heathrow Airport and Milton Keynes.

David Scott, a councillor within TWBC, has outlined the rationale behind the plan to Kent Online, saying:

“When you walk along our streets what you see more than anything else are parked cars. If these pods became available in the town centre, we could pedestrianise the central spine and allow people to transport up and down the road.”

Councillor Scott has revealed that he has been backing the scheme for several years. However, he has confirmed that the project remains in its infancy. In addition, he has described how changes to possible routes have already been introduced.

The strategy has already had success in that its supporters have pointed out weaknesses in an alternative transport solution. It has been argued that a conventional park and ride policy would be too expensive to put into action, while others have suggested that such an approach could have a negative influence on major roads in the neighbourhood.
