What's Happening in Tunbridge Wells, England…

New cultural hub could transform Tunbridge Wells

A new hub is set to be constructed in Tunbridge Wells and once completed, it is hoped that it could add to the cultural offering of the town.

The Amelia Scott centre should be open for business in 2021. Over £13 million is likely to be spent on the innovative scheme. Brochure printing in Tunbridge Wells can promote tourism in the region. Jane March, a councillor for the borough who has responsibility for cultural services, explained the policy to Kent Live:

“One of the things we really believe in is cultural regeneration and it is an important economic driver. We recognise culture is so important. This will transform our museum and cultural services.”

Councillor March believes that the initiative has already yielded positive outcomes. In particular, it might have encouraged large enterprises to invest resources in the town. For example, the Royal Victoria Palace retail centre was purchased by British Land in recent times.

Amelia Scott was an individual who campaigned for social reform. Locally, she is remembered primarily as someone who fought for the right of women to vote.

The new cultural hub is being enabled by finance from the Heritage Lottery Fund. However, more funds are necessary to make a success of the project. Hence renewed campaigning is envisaged to make all the plans into a reality. Construction is due to start at the beginning of 2019, but the Adult Education Centre is already in existence and will form part of the centre.
