With over 500 live cameras across the whole of the local area, and with about 100 dedicated to Swindon town centre itself, the images being recorded will be watched by 16 members of staff every hour of the day.
It is a project which has taken two years to go live.
A joint effort between the council, Wiltshire Police, and business improvement firm InSwindon, it will target anti-social behaviour and crime and, according to the people running the scheme, will save the borough cash.
It is also expected to save local businesses money, with vandalism to shop fronts, Posters, Banners, and street furniture able to be responded to quickly.
Likely to help companies manage their advertising and Stationery printing budgets more effectively, Mark Walker, Swindon Council’s town centre locality lead, said:
“If we see one major incident and act quickly upon it we can save thousands of pounds.
“Our security staff can react straight away if any businesses are broken into, reducing risks and hopefully working more closely with small businesses.”
The new camera system was also welcomed by the inspector of the town centre Paul Saunders, who said he is hopeful it will drive down crime and help evidence be gathered to prosecute criminals.
