Swindon celebrates its literary talent

Local history writers were showcased at the recent event ‘Swindon Affair’.

The literary event was held in a building that once housed the Swindon Railway Museum (SRM). Several organisations came together to make the day possible, and postcard printing in Swindon can be used to promote sites of historical interest.

Swindon Civic Voice (SCV) played a role in putting on the celebration. Martha Parry, of SCV, told the Swindon Advertiser:

“To me Swindon is all about family and community, it’s a place where families grow and develop and I know that having been here for 40 years. There are a surprising number of Books written about Swindon and not all are about the railways so there really is something for everyone.”

Parry suggested that the community spirit of the town had contributed to the literature of the place. She commented that people are proud to be Swindon residents.

Local authors were given an opportunity to display their efforts and to chat with guests. Later in the day, the writers took the chance to deliver more structured talks to their audiences.

John Chandler, the author of ‘Swindon Decoded’, gave a presentation about the relevance of social history. He also discussed the shape of some of the social histories of the town. His contribution was followed by poetry composed by local enthusiasts.
