For the past 18 years, the town of Swindon has maintained a somewhat unusual fundraising tradition and it is set to return in 2019, bigger and better than ever – namely, the annual duck race.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Swindon Old Town, the day will feature three separate races along the river, each starting from opposite The Runner public house. The first will be for businesses and the second for schools, while the third and main race will take place in the afternoon for all who wish to participate.
In 2018, an astounding 14,000 plastic ducks were recorded to have taken to the water and the organisers are keen for this year’s event to prove even more successful. The Club’s president, Roy Parkinson, is proud of the event, stating:
“There’s nothing like the Swindon race – you won’t find any other place doing the same with 15,000 ducks.”
In addition to the famous duck races themselves, the day is said to include a funfair together with music and food and drink facilities. For events such as this, organisers will frequently use techniques like poster printing to attract as many attendees as possible.
This year’s duck race will be taking place on May 27 and proceeds will be divided between local charities, including Big Breakfast, Willows Counselling Service and CALM.
