What's Happening in Reading, England…

Reading to host heritage tour

An architectural tour in Reading will explore the town’s Georgian legacy this autumn.

History buffs and architecture enthusiasts in Reading can take part in an informative experience in September, as a walking tour called “Exploring the Architecture of Georgian Reading” will investigate and illustrate the Berkshire town’s often overlooked contribution to England’s collection of buildings from the period.

Companies operating tours in towns and cities sometimes rely on professional print shops to produce high-quality reproductions of illustrated maps to issue to participating walkers.

The engaging tour is led by the University of Reading’s Architecture lecturer, Dr Stephen Gage, an architectural historian who specialises in the urban, architectural and landscape histories of Britain. Those enrolling can learn about Reading’s Georgian past, which is represented by more than 400 buildings from the period with a listed status.

London Street and Castle Street contain early Georgian houses, while the Assembly Rooms of the Town Hall date to 1785. Later buildings from the 1830s include Eldon Square and the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Other highlights include the terraces on Russell Street, Queen’s Road and King’s Road.

The Exploring the Architecture of Georgian Reading tour will now be held on Saturday, September 13. The educational walk begins at Reading Town Hall at 10 am, which can be found on Belgrave Street in Reading. The four-kilometre route heads east and south before returning to its starting point.
