Reading Borough Council (RBC) has said that it Plans to replace The Hexagon with a new local theatre. At present, a market consultation has started, with the aim of locating an investor for the potential construction.
Paul Gittings, a member of RBC with responsibility for cultural matters, explained the move to Get Reading:
“This represents the first step in our long-standing ambition to build a new theatre for Reading which would cement its reputation as an artistic and cultural centre in the region.”
Gittings made clear that the whole process could take some time. Furthermore, he underlined the fact that current financial constraints on the local authority are driving the search for private sector involvement. Finally, he clarified that RBC would play an important role in the initiative by providing the necessary land.
The Hexagon dates back to the 1970s, and attracted large audiences. Situated on Queen’s Walk, it remains popular with those who attend. The problem is that the cost of maintaining the building is on the rise. It has been predicted that keeping The Hexagon going would end up costing more and more. No specific site for a replacement has been selected as yet.
When the replacement is ready for use, demand for leaflets from Reading printers could increase as it announces new shows.Get a Free Quote for Plans
