Musician makes melodies inspired by Preston memories

A Preston-based singer-songwriter has just issued his first record, filled with songs influenced by living in the North West city.

Ric Birthill, 25, is the man behind The Preston EP, which contains five tracks dealing with subjects like romance, religion and work, and he has stated that he is committed to writing songs dealing with everyday situations in his home town.

Birthill has issued the EP on his own record label Friargate, named in tribute to the area of Preston in which he lived at one point. Fiercely independent local artists like Birthill utilise internet music download and streaming sites for exposure but also often rely on help from local businesses such as Preston Print shops that can supply promotional Flyers and full colour printing for cover artwork.

Despite working outside of the mainstream music industry, Birthill says the release is already capturing attention. He told the Lancashire Evening Post:

“The EP is already getting great reviews.

“Since uploading it to Bandcamp as a free download, it has received very generous donations from people who don’t feel comfortable ‘getting something this good for free’.”

The musician is now set to hit the road in support of the record, embarking on a UK tour named ‘Comin’ straight outta Preston – The Preston EP Mini Tour’, in March. He Plans to have a new single ready for release by the summer.
