West End transformation under discussion

A meeting has been held to discuss the ways in which the West End of Oxford can be redeveloped, so that it becomes one of the centre of town’s most modern areas.

The Academy of Urbanism and Oxford Civic Society joined forces to organise this event, which saw architects and developers shown around the industrial estate at Osney Mead, the Oxpens, Oxford Railway Station and Frideswide Square.

Under the Plans for redevelopment, these areas are set to gain a hotel, hundreds of new houses, teaching buildings and offices. A deal has now been agreed between Oxford City Council and Nuffield College to allow work to go ahead.

Oxford University is hoping that Osney Mead can become a ‘knowledge park’, focused on research and high-tech science and Oxford Civic Society is cooperating with Nuffield College and the university to get the views of local people about the development.

Tony Turton, from the civic society, told the Oxford Mail that:

“We want to know what people who live and work in these areas want here in the future. It’s important they have their say because ultimately it is the public who will be using these spaces.”

Those behind Plans such as these ones can rely on places offering full colour printing, if they want to provide prints showing people what the changes will look like.

Work should get underway in 2017.
