Volunteer work recognised in Oxford

For the third consecutive year, Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action has distributed a number of awards to individuals across the region.

Prizes were presented to 38 winners at the Charity and Volunteer Awards ceremony, all of whom were deemed to have made a positive difference to their communities. The event took place at Oxford’s Town Hall.

The Chairman of OCVA, Helen Baker, spoke to an audience of around 200 people to say that more of the area’s residents seem to be giving their time up each year. According to Baker, the awards, winners and nominations have become even more exciting in 2013.

Assisted Reading for Children in Oxfordshire was presented with the award for its management of volunteer workers. Disadvantaged youngsters across Oxford are encouraged to read by 240 people who are recruited, trained and supported during the course of their work.

The Environment Award was secured by Friends of Radley Lakes, following a three-year campaign to prevent Didcot power station from dumping ash in Thrupp Lake. The Earth Trust now maintains the land around the lakes.

Base 33 was given the title of ‘charity of the year 2013’. The group supports young people between the ages of 13 and 24 in Witney and the surrounding areas.

The awards are possible thanks to 11 companies which provide sponsorship. There are 10 categories overall, with 31 charities receiving nominations.

The services of Print companies in Oxford may, in the future, be required to promote the work that these groups do. Eye-catching Posters could also be used to encourage more people to get involved.
