Oxford to get park and rides

Several park and ride spots are being planned for sites on the outskirts of Oxford, with the hope being that the project will be completed by sometime during 2031.

Oxfordshire County Council has published a report in which it states that four local green belt locations – at Oxford Airport, Sandford, Lodge Hill and Cumnor – should be used for the £75 million project. A further such site will be built in Eynsham.

Once completed the five spots would offer nearly 6,000 spaces in total, with the existing car park at Thornhill also due to be expanded by a further 435 spaces and Oxford Parkway to get another 1,070.

The transport member for Oxfordshire County Council, David Nimmo Smith, told the Oxford Mail that it was vital to have these park and ride spots due to Plans for 100,000 houses to be built in Oxfordshire – as well as the creation of jobs for 85,000 more people - in the next decade and a half. Smith said:

“Oxfordshire is a growing county, meaning long term solutions are needed so the transport system meets the demand of the future. This is only a technical study. But this means we are able to proactively respond to future challenges.”

If these Plans go ahead, the council will have the option of using places that provide sign printing, so that people are able to easily locate them.
