Oxford Stadium hopes for greyhound return

Following a two-year absence, greyhound racing may be set for an Oxford Stadium revival, if Plans for leasing the ground come to fruition.

The stadium, in Sandy Lane, was a popular venue for speedway and greyhound racing until its closure for financial reasons in 2012, but since the announcement that it was being advertised for rent, hopes have been raised that these could restart.

The stadium is jointly owned by Risk Capital and Galliard Homes, and their initial plan was to demolish it and build houses on the site. This has subsequently run into problems with planning permission, and the site is now available for £250,000 per year rent, with those looking to save the stadium hoping that a successful lease for racing purposes could prevent demolition.

In this regard, they would be able to call on local business support, such as Print companies in Oxford that can produce the poster and flyer printing needed to help bring the punters back to the venue.

Nick Budimir, an ex-greyhound owner who had previously bid to purchase the stadium, said:

“Managed properly, it can still be one of the best tracks in Britain and Ireland. Our offer to buy the stadium stands, in fact we have asked CBRE to ‘name your price’. We will monitor the situation and take our next step accordingly.”

Risk Capital and Galliard Homes declined to comment on Plans for the stadium.
