Teachers and pupils at Pegasus Primary School now have access to a modern reading room facility thanks to a successful fundraising drive.
The new building was opened last week by William Alden, the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, after an 18 month period of fundraising.
Jill Hudson, who is the school’s head teacher, confirmed that the drive saw £92,000 raised, surpassing the original target of £75,000. Money was collected through various means – one of which was a concert put together by the New College Chapel Choir of Oxford University.
According to the Oxford Mail, Hudson said that a number of foundations made donations and pupils helped by busking using hand bells.
The head teacher gave particular thanks to Elena Snow, a grandmother who volunteers with her husband in the Assisted Reading for Children group in Oxfordshire.
Hudson said the idea for the room followed an observation made by Snow, that the previous room set aside for reading was ‘smelly’ since it was located next to toilets. Limited space, she explained, meant that the school was relatively full. She finished by saying that the pupils deserve a ‘decent place to sit and read’.
For schools, new facilities such as reading rooms, lounges and computer facilities are showcased to parents prior to opening through services offered by professional brochure printers, in Oxford and elsewhere in the county.
According to one mother who attended the reading room’s opening, the facility was built quickly and offers a great environment for the children on rainy days.
