Football club in Oxford aims to become musical mainstay

Abingdon United fans may soon be able to prove that they rock harder than supporters of any other football team, as their club aims to turn itself into an Oxford musical Mecca.

Members of the Hellenic League club with a passion for rock and roll are already getting this process underway, as they have booked several touring groups to play at the venue during the course of the year.

First to take to the stage there will be U2 Tribe, a band that plays covers of songs by the Irish rockers, and they will be supported by local indie band 31hours.

The marketing officer for Abingdon United, Mark Cunningham, told the Oxford Mail that he hoped to provide the area with a much needed centre for live music. He explained:

“The club was formed in 1946 but this is a completely new idea for us. There are a couple of us who are very keen music fans and we have this really good function room which sits there a lot of the time not being used.”

Once the club opens its doors as a music venue, it will be able to make use of promotional poster printing in Oxford when it wants to put the word out about upcoming gigs.

A deal has been inked with Archer Productions, a PA hire firm, to supply lighting and sound, and the first gig is this Friday, April 24.
