A deserted medieval village, three miles from Lutterworth, has become part of a dispute between rival developers.
The heritage site of Bittesby and parish had a population of just six according to the 2001 census. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book with 25 families recorded as residents, the village was depopulated in 1494. Not much remains of the site today apart from the remains and outlines of dwellings, indicated by hollow ways and platforms. Stonework to the north of the site is believed to have been a chapel.
Rival developers are competing for the expansion of an existing industrial area, Magna Park, close to the ancient site. Magna Park owners, IDA Gazeley, want to develop the current industrial site with a one million square foot distribution and storage centre, which will be in close proximity to the deserted village. While DB Symmetry plan to develop land opposite Magna Park which they see “as a viable alternative that would not impact on the heritage site.”
A judicial review has just been granted and Harborough District Council now has to consider both Plans or the matter may be referred to the High Court. A special planning committee meeting is scheduled for later this year.
Print shops may benefit from the decision as new businesses could require the services of a local Print company.Get a Free Quote for Plans Get a Free Quote for Print
