The pupils at Broughton Astley's Old Mill Primary School were tasked by traffic police to create eye-catching Posters that could potentially be replicated to deter motorists from speeding, using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts.
Professional printing companies in Lutterworth often produce Posters to advertise local businesses and their expertise could also be used to help the police to crack down on rogue drivers. The experts at such firms should know how to create an effective mix of text and imagery.
The young entrants created 60 Posters in total and of all the children who took part, six were chosen as winners. The lucky pupils then got to accompany the police on a trip to catch careless drivers. During the expedition, 13 motorists were pulled over for various offences, including speeding.
PC John Blagden was the main officer working alongside the children to drum up their interest. He spoke about the main reasons behind the initiative, saying:
"We have reacted to concerns in the community that speeding and distraction-driving was a problem and we have involved the kids also.”
PC Blagden also said that the work to curb dangerous driving has been a success so far, and that the police service in Lutterworth wishes to build on this by continuing to work with local school children after the summer holidays have ended.
