Heritage award for local project

A charity focused on educational projects and located near Lutterworth has been awarded a county prize, in recognition of the important work it does in teaching youngsters about its heritage.

The Cotesbach Educational Trust was set up with the aim of enlightening young people in the area about arts, heritage, local history and the environment. It is based just outside of Lutterworth, in a former schoolhouse that dates back to the Victorian era and that holds Grade II listed status.

Those behind this organisation received invites to the recent joint ceremony for the Leicestershire County Council Heritage and the Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Forum Awards, which was held in the department of museum studies at Leicester University. Although it was up against some serious competition, the trust went on to claim a prestigious award for ‘Bringing Heritage Alive’.

The project that led to it winning this prize was called Re-Writing the Archives, which was financed by the Arts Council and was undertaken during 2015. Its project director, Katherine Brown, told the Lutterworth Mail that:

“Five professional UK writers delved into our unique archive and each produced a short audio drama based on their discoveries. Plays were recorded by a professional acting ensemble and aired at vintage tea parties and on specially designed micro-websites.”
