Proposed hospital near Epsom gets go ahead

A cutting-edge new NHS hospital is set to be built close to Epsom, with the Health Secretary Matt Hancock having opted to give the proposals the go ahead.

This brand new facility will be located at a site in Sutton, while existing buildings in St Helier and Epsom will be given comprehensive makeovers before being used for district health services.

The hospital will form part of a wider plan for the UK’s health infrastructure that has been announced by the government, aiming to construct 40 state-of-the-art hospitals in the next 10 years. In total, this plan is expected to cost £3.7bn to implement.

Following the announcement by the Health Secretary, the Epsom and St Helier University Hospital Trust Chief Executive, Daniel Elkeles, told Gov.uk the trust was delighted the decision had been made to go ahead, before adding:

“We are now proceeding at full speed to design the new hospitals and will soon be engaging with our local communities on the new hospital facilities.”

The general public in the borough was consulted about the Plans for the hospital earlier this year. It is expected that work on building it will start in 2022.
