Former Epsom student to launch choral competition

A former student at Epsom College is launching a new nationwide choral competition, which will showcase talented amateur choirs.

Lucy Mitchell has created a competition called UK Choir of the Year after spending over 12 months developing the Plans for it. The idea behind the contest is to draw attention to the many gifted amateur choirs that Britain has to offer, including a live showcase for the grand finale.

The competition is set to be launched with a special concert next month, which will double as a way to raise cash for choir bursaries. Mitchell will perform with the Adams Street Singers, while other performers will be The Choir with No Name, The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir and Citi London Choir.

Mitchell is a gifted singer who lives just outside of Epsom, in Worcester Park. She studied music at Epsom College. Local educational establishments like colleges and schools sometimes use Stationery printers in Epsom for their teaching materials.

Speaking to Epsom & Ewell Times, Mitchell stated:
“So many choirs are doing extraordinary work but rarely get the chance to be heard nationally. This competition exists to celebrate the standard, diversity and community behind choral singing across the UK.”

Among the judges will be notable choral music figures Karen Gibson MBE, Dan Ludford-Thomas and Will Todd.

Applications will open during June this year, with the live grand final scheduled for April 2027.
