Environmental changes coming to Epsom

Epsom and Ewell Borough Council has set a target of making the borough carbon neutral within the next 15 years and has now unveiled the first changes to help it achieve this.

A working group that has been given the name ‘Climate Change Action Group’ has been set up by the council to help with this aim of cutting the borough’s carbon footprint. This group has outlined some ideas for how to go about this, with the two that are set to be implemented most quickly being the introduction of electric buses and drinking fountains.

It is hoped that by the time 2020 draws to a close, the Harrier Centre and market place will have had drinking fountains added to them, with the aim of reducing the number of plastic water bottles that are discarded.

Alongside this, the council is also planning to bring in electric buses by the summer, which members of the council have been urging for several years. This is all in a good cause, but some traditional products like paper Stationery provided by Epsom Stationery printers will still be essential.

Speaking to Surrey Live, Alex Coley from the council said:

“Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing the planet and is one that can only be addressed by changing the way we do certain things.”

Coley is leading the Climate Change Action Group.
