Epsom will be marking the D-Day anniversary this year by lighting a beacon in commemoration, after the idea was given the nod by Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators.
This group is connected to the local council and it opted to approve the Plans during a meeting that was held this month. Epsom Downs is home to a beacon that was lit for the first time two years ago to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Now it will be illuminating the area again for a very different, but equally important, occasion.
This year it will be 80 years since the D-Day invasion of Normandy by the Allied forces that marked the beginning of the end of World War Two. It was the biggest land, air and sea military operation in history and it will be remembered with a number of events throughout the UK.
People from the town are to be invited onto Epsom Downs for the day, to witness the lighting and enjoy other activities. A section of the course will be set aside for food and drinks, while there will also be toilets provided. Banner printing from Epsom shops can be used if the organisers want to put up Banners related to the event.
This lighting is scheduled to take place during the evening of Thursday 6th June, which was the date of the D-Day landings.
