Nestled in an industrial estate spanning 1,100 acres in North Acton is an increasing number of affordable artist’s studios, creating a hub for up and coming creatives based in the area.
Architect Johnny Brewin launched Republic of Park Royal to provide a cost-effective solution for creatives looking for a place to work. Featuring large windows that let in natural light and simple corrugated roofs, numerous rows of individual workshops have been established on site.
As an industrial area with official protection, the buildings in the vicinity cannot be renovated and converted into residential properties. Despite the rising premises prices, Brewin, who relocated his enterprise from East London’s Hackney Wick, is attempting to cap rental costs for local creatives. He commented that:
“We are not against gentrification, but it must work for existing residents as well as those moving into an area.”

Many students at London’s Imperial College, which has a campus in White City nearby, live in North Acton. The architect’s future ambition is to start a local gallery dedicated to artists in the area where work can be displayed and connect both residents and students alike.
