The London Transport Museum’s Acton Depot will be the location for a Design Icons Tour this November.
Figures behind the iconic designs associated with London’s system will be brought to life by museum guides.
The tour will include insight into individuals such as Harry Beck, the man responsible for the creation of London’s Underground map. The idea of a full-colour system map was Beck’s brainchild. He believed that the illumination of the various lines and showing passengers where to change stations was more important than geographical accuracy.
Another design pioneer discussed on the tour will be Edward Johnston. It was Johnston who created an entirely new typeface to be used at London Underground stations, as well as the ‘bullseye’ Logo Design that is now synonymous with the Tube in England’s capital. This iconic font is still in evidence today at historic stations such as Covent Garden.
Although the tour is aimed at adults, organisers point out that older children with an interest in transport may enjoy the event, too.
Along with the historical maps and features on Beck’s iconic design, attendees will also have the opportunity to see a classic Routemaster bus in this working depot.
The Design Icons Tour will take place on Saturday, 11th November from 11am to 1pm. Tickets are priced at £13, with £11 concessions for students with valid ID, disabled visitors and over-65s.
