Acton celebrates a distinctive aspect of travel

London Transport will be holding a 'Design Icons Tour', one of its regular events, in Acton in mid-November.

This is a chance to learn more about some of the backstories and the people behind some of the metropolis's most impactful designs linked to transport; factors that we often take for granted when busily engaged in our daily lives and activities.

It encompasses everything from Edward Johnston's font, seen right across the network, to Harry Beck's original and revolutionary Underground Map. These are now synonymous worldwide with travel in the capital.

Topics include how the TfL roundel evolved and the development of the Johnston font, as well as a look at historic maps, Harry Beck's approach and the now famous Routemaster bus.

The well-informed volunteer guides will offer detailed explanations for each design icon. This tour is aimed at adults, but should also appeal to children who are interested in the subject matter.

Given the depot's working status, it cannot be guaranteed that all vehicles and objects will not be moved or that every topic has time to be discussed.

Adult tickets cost £14.00 and concessions are priced at £11.00. Graphic design plays an important role in the promotion and presentation of different types of transport.

The 'Design Icons Tour' will take place twice, starting at 11.00 am and 2.00 pm on Saturday, 16 November at the London Transport Museum Depot, Acton.
