Vaughn cyclists seek access to proposed highway

A group of cycling enthusiasts from Vaughan is hoping to have the needs of bike users taken into account in the plans for the proposed GTA West highway.

The association, called the Vaughan Bicycle User Group (BUG), has prepared a list of recommendations for the Ministry of Transportation that would make the route more friendly to both pedestrians and those who use alternative Forms of transport.

The vice chair of the BUG wants to make sure that their needs are being taken into consideration. Another member noted that he recognizes that the highway will be going ahead, but there should be a way for the needs of all potential users to be met.

Vaughan has been working to provide safe road access to bicycle riders. In 2007, authorities developed a master plan, and have since installed 68 kilometres of bike lanes with proper signage. A printing company can provide these Signs.

There are currently plans for more routes to be added in the city, and the BUG vice chair feels that if more cyclists make their wishes known, this will continue to be a priority. She is planning on approaching city council in the spring with a proposal that a cycling and pedestrian committee be established. This could make recommendations to the council about further ensuring that the roads are safe for all users.
