One of Ontario’s most popular casual games will be looking to score a greater goal this month, as Vaughan hosts the Princess Margaret Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer fundraiser.
The annual festival sees hundreds of amateur teams gather to play three-on-three hockey on the street surface. Each team is guaranteed four games over the course of the day, with 8-12 total players per team. Teams are sorted into different divisions based on experience and age, with many teams representing companies, families, or friend groups.
The fundraiser will also feature a number of hockey pros such as Sarah Nurse, Wendel Clark, Georges Laraque and more as “celebrity” players. The teams that top the fundraiser charts will have a chance to draft a celeb to their team and fulfill their dreams of playing with a pro.
Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer will also feature live music and plentiful food and drink, including a beer garden area. There will be awards for the top fundraisers, as well as an all-celeb exhibition match. All funds raised through the event go towards the Princess Margaret Hospital and contributes to cancer research and treatment. Fundraising events such as this often use tools such as brochure printing and special presentations to raise awareness of the cause they are supporting. The event has raised over $26 million over its 11 years of edition.
The 2023 Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event will take place in the parking lot of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre on September 30.
