Vaughan ON unveils new city logo

Beginning June 29, 2011 the city of Vaughan will have a new logo that will appear on everything from city vehicles to city property to city correspondence. New city Stationery printing has probably been in process since the design was chosen.

The new logo features a line drawing of the clock tower of Vaughan City Hall. The clock tower is sitting on an inverted triangle on the far left of the logo. The half of the triangle on the left of the tower is coloured using Pantone Blue 294, as is the side of the clock tower. The half of the triangle on the right of the tower consists of 5 white lines on a Pantone Green 376 background. These 5 lines are to represent the 5 centres that made up Vaughan when it amalgamated in 1991. To the right appears the name of Vaughan, in Pantone 294 and it is underlined with Pantone Green 376.

The logo uses the Gotham typeface, a geometric sans serif that was designed by Tobias Frere-Jones and Jesse Ragan in 2000.

The new logo is simple and gets right to the point. It was chosen partly because it has “modern flair with clean typography that reflects the City’s growth as a vibrant and successful community.” Choosing a plain logo lets the public know that getting down to business is what is important. A less modern looking logo with numerous illustrations would just make it look cluttered and less appealing to the eye.
