The Vaughan International Music Festival (VIMF) will be returning this summer after a successful trial run last year.
A resolution approving the festival to run for free for the next three years was passed by Vaughan City Council on January 18. The resolution was proposed by Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Racco. The VIMF was conceived as a way to draw visitors to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, the city’s centrally planned downtown core. The festival is to focus on locally grown music that showcases Vaughan’s diverse culture. It is also part of Vaughan’s Culture Days event, a province-wide event that each municipality puts its own spin on. A concert line-up and locations will be announced in months leading up to the event.
The first test edition of the VIMF took place this September outdoors on Edgely Boulevard. The show featured the 25-member Toronto Chinese Orchestra alongside other local musicians and groups. It was enough of a success to win a 2021 Ontario Culture Days Spotlight Award. Music festivals like this typically rely on support from community groups and businesses, the musicians themselves, Print shops for promotional items and local restaurants and breweries for food and drink stalls.
The 2022 edition of the Vaughan International Music Festival has been announced to take place on the weekend of June 10 to 12.
