The final stop on this 8.6 km subway extension, from the north of Toronto to the City of Vaughan, received its official name from the Toronto Transit Commission, and Mayor Bevilacqua could not be happier.
The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is a new downtown development planned in Vaughan, and the new subway station will be located at Highway 7 just west of Jane Street, at the heart of the new community.
Businesses, residences, entertainment, shopping, and cultural activities are all planned for the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, otherwise known as the VMC. Mayor Bevilacqua said that the name selection is good news for the City of Vaughan in its efforts to transform itself from a suburban community to a world-class city. The station will be a cornerstone in the development of the new downtown, and the name coincides with the marketing and branding of the VMC.
The subway will extend in a northwest direction from Downsview station, with five stops, before terminating at the VMC. The five stops take in Finch West, Sheppard West, Steeles West, York University, and Highway 407 stations. A colourful flyer printing of the subway extension route, created by one of Vaughan's great local printing companies, can be downloaded from www.vaughan.ca.
Vaughan City Manager, Clayton Harris, pointed out that the TTC’s name selection is an example of how the many partners in the subway extension project, including the federal government, the province of Ontario, York Region, the City of Toronto, and the TTC have all worked together to make the subway extension a success.
