Vaughan’s own McMichael Canadian Art Collection has announced a series of events designed to help children and parents unlock their creativity during the holiday break.
The McMichael will be holding three ArtVenture Winter Workshops, aimed at children age five to nine. These will explain artistic concepts such as linear expression, colour theory, and the use of shapes, drawing from the gallery’s paintings from artists such as Tom Thompson and Norval Morrisseau. Parents are invited to tour the gallery during these morning lessons, taking in the permanent collection, as well as the new exhibit of work by Marcel Dzama “Ghosts of Canoe Lake”, which opens on December 9 and is inspired by the work of the Group of Seven.
In the afternoon, families will reconvene for the popular “Storytelling Circles” event, an interactive in-gallery program showcasing the gallery’s works of art and the story between them. The programming will be different each day, and will touch on the lives and ideas of the same artist featured in the morning session. Gallery visitors can also attend these sessions separately. Museums, libraries and other public institutions often host educational programming such as this during school breaks to attract a family audience, using visual elements like brochure printing and hands-on activities to reach learners.
The ArtVenture Winter Workshops will take place from December 27 to 29 at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, with pre-registration required for the morning lesson.
