Vaughan cyclists on first Wellspring Peloton

Three Vaughan citizens are training hard so that they can take part in the ride of a lifetime. As part of the Wellspring Peloton Challenge taking place this October, they are set to cycle from Toronto to Austin, Texas, a ride of 2,663 kilometers.

The Wellspring Peloton Challenge will have five pelotons of 6-7 riders racing towards Austin in early fall. In racing circles, the peloton is known as a large group of riders in a cycling race that sticks together for the majority of the race. The riders in the peloton save energy by riding close together. The rider in front receives the most wind resistance and drops off to the back of the pack, only to move slowly up again to the front. The peloton has been compared to birds flying in formation.

The race to Austin, Texas, will be a 24-hour undertaking where the racers in each peloton will ride relay-style until the finish. Each peloton will ride six hours, then riders can rest up as they travel by vehicle to the next relay point, which must be reached within 24 hours. The course is expected to take eight days to complete.

The three Vaughan cyclists will be part of the first ride to Austin that starts in Toronto. The Wellspring center is looking for more participants, hoping to have a total of 35 riders. They will join all other riders making the journey from other destinations at the rendezvous point in Austin.
