The Small World Concert series will be bringing an acclaimed fado artist to Vaughan as part of a celebration of the local Portuguese community.
The featured artist for the concert is Mariza, an award-winning Mozambique-born artist who has been acclaimed for bringing the Portuguese musical style to worldwide attention. The fado genre dates back to the 19th century and is associated with tragic lyrical themes and string instruments, with Mariza’s music also incorporating aspects of funk and soul.
The Vaughan concert is held in partnership with 70 Anos Canada, a Portuguese-Canadian cultural group that is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Saturnia in Canada in 1953, which brought many Portuguese families to the country.
The Mariza concert will be raising money for the Magellan Community Foundation, which aims to build a long-term care home for Portuguese-speaking seniors. The Small World Music Series, supported by local arts organizations, is an offshoot of the festival of the same name and features musical artists from around the world, featuring a variety of different languages and musical traditions. World music concerts such as these typically use methods such as poster printing and local media to help reach cultural communities that may be left out by mainstream music.
The Mariza concert will take place on May 13 at Universal Event Space in Vaughan.
