The Thornhill Archives and Special Collections was established in 2001 by the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill. Printing companies in Vaughan, ON appreciate the archives as a look into the past history of printing in the area.
The archives span over 150 years of Thornhill history. The records they keep are from private individuals and groups. The mission of the Thornhill Archives is to collect “and preserve information media...which provide information about everyday and special activities in Thornhill.” The collection includes documents, photographs, Journals and memorabilia; basically anything private individuals care to donate that helps to illustrate the history of the area.
The Thornhill Archives are divided into several areas; family or genealogical files, subject files about local businesses and events, house and building files, maps from the 1850s until the 1990s, an AV collection that includes oral histories, artefacts such as building materials and tickets to special events, and an art collection featuring the works of Thoreau MacDonald, John Greer, William Walton Armstrong, and Kathy Alexander.
The Archives are located in William Walton Armstrong House at 42 Old Yonge St. and can be viewed by appointment only by emailing archives@thornhillhistoric.org.
