Hand Up Toronto, a local charity, has established a unique drive-through food bank in Vaughan and other locations across the Greater Toronto Area to help families in need during this challenging time.
The organization was created to help deal with food insecurity arising from ongoing shutdowns. The drive-through service is designed to serve as the delivery arm of Hand Up’s food relief efforts in conjunction with Global Medic, which more than 20,000 families have signed up for.
Food packages will include staples that can be used to cook a variety of healthy meals at home that could last for multiple weeks. Volunteers pack the food throughout the week using safe and hygienic handling methods.
The program came to Vaughan on May 3, handing out food in the parking lot of the shuttered Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre. Local politicians such as City Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco stopped by to lend a hand. Over 500 families received over 10,000 pounds of food. Efforts like these often rely on collective community effort, ranging from local grocers and farmers providing food, volunteers distributing it, and Print shops providing poster printing services to raise awareness of the event.
Hand Up returned to Vaughan Mills the following week, along with the University of Toronto campus in Scarborough. The organization hopes to reach 1,000 families per week. Registered families can check on their website and social media pages for future dates.Get a Free Quote for Print
