Local Vaughan group to present classic musical
Vaughan’s DreamTheatre Productions will be performing their version of a Broadway classic this winter as The King & I takes the stage.
The musical is based on the true story of a governess who worked for the King of Siam, now Thailand, in the 19th century. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s take on the material premiered on-stage in 1951 and has been a theatrical staple ever since. The DreamTheatre production, in association with Bellevue Productions, will feature local talent from the Vaughan area both on stage and behind the scenes. Actors were selected through an open audition process in September, with a separate process for child actors to play the King’s children.
The play will be staged across four days, with matinee and dinner theatre options available. The production is directed by Marty Story, who founded the theatre company and has directed many of its projects, including 2024’s production of The Pope. 2024 marked the group’s 15th year of performing, with past shows including other Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals like The Sound of Music and South Pacific. Community theatre groups like this often use grassroots advertising methods like poster printing and social media to help attract a wider audience.
The DreamTheatre Production of The King and I will run from January 30 to February 2 at Bellvue Manor in Vaughan.
