Spring is here, and bright yellow daffodils can be seen popping up everywhere, but not all of them are in gardens.
April is the month when the Canadian Cancer Society holds its annual Daffodil campaign to raise much needed funds to provide public education about cancer, encourage further research, and offer support for those living with the disease.
Volunteers will be selling daffodil pins throughout the Vaughan area, and people are encouraged to wear them and show that they support people battling the disease. Print companies have produced Flyers and colorful Signs to help promote the campaign.
Though everyone has been encouraged to wear one of the bright yellow flowers throughout the whole month, the 27th of April is an especially important day. This is Daffodil Day, when people all across the country are asked to pin them to their clothing as a show of solidarity and support for those living with cancer and their families. The flowers also honor the memory of those who were not able to win the fight.
Daffodil Day is often seen as a day to do something special for someone living with cancer. People can make a meal, offer to babysit, or just sit quietly and be there for someone who is facing tough days ahead.
Every three minutes, another Canadian is given the devastating news that they have cancer, and the pins help them to know that they are not facing the disease alone. They also represent hope for the future and bright days beyond.
