Approval sought for changes to Vaughans storm water policy

The city of Vaughan is set to give its staff the green light to begin changing the formula they use when calculating the cost a property owner will have to pay for storm water control measures.

The new calculation method, which is similar to that used in many other municipalities in the province, will see owners’ pay based upon the type of the property in question, as they tend to generate different levels of runoff.

Owners of single-family dwellings, townhomes and condos, and also industrial, institutional and commercial customers will all have a different formula. Under the new rules, owners of buildings that house one family and other types of dwellings could end up paying less than they do now.

Currently, the funding to pay for storm runoff infrastructure comes from both water bills and property taxes, and for the typical homeowner, that works out to about $100 each year. Under the new system, they may pay as little as $29. This saving is also possible for those who live in high-rises and also small and medium sized industrial and commercial enterprises. Those who own large properties may end up paying slightly more than they do now. Brochures can be mailed out to explain the new policies to those affected by them.

According to the city, this new system would makes paying for the service of dealing with runoff more equitable for all. Should approval be granted, the new rules will come into effect in 2017.
