Toronto workshop to help children cope with anxiety

As with people of any age, anxiety can be an issue for children, and an upcoming Toronto workshop will teach them how to deal with, and reduce, this emotion.

The session, which is geared towards kids from ages eight to eleven, will last for three hours, and will use art and other activities to teach them effective coping techniques should they feel anxious. They will be encouraged to explore a variety of options that can be helpful to them, and choose the ones that work the best. They will also put them in to practice so that it will be easy for them to call on these skills when they need them. Lamination can be used for a workshop like this to create “flashcard” style cards with calming tips on them that they children can refer back to if they are experiencing anxiety.

The afternoon will be facilitated by experts in the field, including an art therapist, a registered psychotherapist and an Ontario Certified Teacher. At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will have their own Coping Skill Kit to take home with them.

The workshop will be held on December 11 at the Centre for Social Innovation, Annex 720 on Bathurst Street, and is being hosted by Room for Learning. The cost to participate is $80 each.
