As Canadian “snowbirds” make their way back to their northern homes, the country’s feathered friends are also returning to their summer residence, and a Toronto event will bid them a warm welcome.
The city will be celebrating the return of the birds with its Birding for Beginners walking workshop.
It will be held in Tommy Thompson Park, where no fewer than 334 species have been spotted, according to the organizers.
The registration fee for the activity is $15.00, and it will teach the attendees the basics of the hobby so they can hit the ground running. They will learn how to identify the more common species, as well as which guides may be best suited to those who are just getting started. Tips for choosing and using equipment will be shared, and when they head for home, everyone will have the knowledge they need to hopefully spot a “lifer”.
The workshop is part of the larger TRCA Spring Bird Festival, which includes events hosted across the Greater Toronto Area. Simple field guides, identification tip sheets and other materials that may be used at such an event can be ordered from a local printing services company.
The Birding for Beginners workshop planned for Tommy Thompson Park will take to the trails at 10:00 am on May 17th. Accommodations for disabled individuals may be available, and the organizers can be contacted to discuss this further at tisha.tan@trca.ca.
