Festival to celebrate Iranian culture in Toronto

The annual Tirgan Festival is set to take place over four days in Toronto next month. The event is one of the biggest celebrations of Iranian culture in Canada.

Over 120,000 people visited this event in 2011 and 150,000 are expected to take part this year.

The festival, which is presented by the Iranian-Canadian Centre for Art and Culture, will consist of over 70 individual cultural events. The events will involve dance, music, theatre, cinema, literature and visual arts.

There will also be workshops, art galleries and a variety of food. In addition, a traditional bazaar will be selling all kinds of Iranian products and foods. It will be an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in different cultures to learn about the country in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

The Tirgan magazine will also be available during the festival. There was a competition to design the cover of the magazine based on this year’s theme, which is ‘Hope’. The organizers are also holding a short story contest and a photography competition, both of which have cash prizes. No doubt Toronto printing companies will have had a hand in the printing of the magazine.

While many of the activities are free, some do come with a ticket price. Some of the paid performances include the music of Hamed Nikpay and a flamenco dance show. Tickets to the opening ceremonies are $25 and include an operatic narration.

The Tirgan Festival will take place at the Harbourfront Centre from July 18-21. For more information, visit the website at www.tirgan.ca.
