David Blackwood prints exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario

The exhibit Black Ice: Prints of Newfoundland is currently being displayed at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto; it will run until June 12, 2011. Print companies in Toronto are always interested in any exhibits that show the possibilities of the printed medium.

David Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, Newfoundland. He has works in every major gallery in Canada; also Queen Elizabeth II owns some of his prints and there are some in the Uffizi gallery in Florence, Italy. Blackwood also has a street named after him in Sarnia. He has been working in prints for at least 30 years and he is known as a leading printmaker in Canada today.

Blackwood is best known for his intaglio prints. Intaglio prints are made from copper or zinc plates that have been etched or engraved. Ink is then applied to the surface and the plates are pressed onto the paper.

The exhibit has Blackwood’s prints arranged in a way that looks at the history of Newfoundland using the prints as illustrations. There is also a book available at the Art Gallery of Ontario gift shop.
